Breakdancing has been given formal approval to be part of the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
It will join Surfing, Sport climbing and Skateboarding all of which will make their own Olympic debuts next year in Tokyo.
The two most recent sports added to the Olympic programme were Rugby Sevens and Golf, both of which were perhaps more likely to generate more engagement in Ireland.

“The four sports that Paris has proposed are all totally in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 because they contribute to making the programme more gender balanced and more urban, and offer the opportunity to connect with the younger generation,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “The proposed sports are in line with these principles and enhance Paris 2024’s overall dynamic Games concept, which focuses on inclusivity, inspiring a new audience and hosting socially responsible Games.”
The four new sports will accommodate 248 athletes, split equally between men and women. Breakdancing made its first appearance at an Olympic event in Buenos Aires last year at the Youth Olympic Games where Russian athlete Bumblebee took gold in the Men’s section, and Ram from Japan took the Women’s gold.
Sport has to move on to stay relevant and while none of the new sports are expected to replace athletics, swimming and gymnastics among the most popular olympic sports they all have their place.
Squash was one of the sports that had bid to be part of the Olymopic programme in 2024 but which was overlooked.
