After a hugely successful first year, In Her Boots, supported by Aviva, is back for Year Two — with an expanded programme designed to empower even more girls to stay in football and sport.
Launched in 2024 to tackle the ongoing drop-off in girls’ participation, the free education and awareness initiative has already reached over 2,000 coaches, parents, and volunteers across clubs nationwide since its debut last September.
The programme, led by the FAI, focuses on female-specific coaching, injury prevention, nutrition, and the creation of inclusive club environments — areas that have resonated strongly with communities and driven exceptional demand.
Empowering Volunteers
At its core, In Her Boots aims to educate and empower the football volunteer workforce, particularly those working with girls aged 9 to 16, through expert-led workshops and practical resources.
Delivered by FAI Development Officers, sessions provide evidence-based guidance on injury reduction, female health, and managing the physiological changes girls experience during adolescence, such as training through puberty.
The programme also advises clubs on inclusive practices, from kit and facilities to communication and culture, ensuring that girls feel welcome, valued, and supported to stay in the game.
Partnership Driving Long-Term Change
Backed by Aviva and the FAI’s shared commitment to grassroots development, In Her Boots has become a leading initiative in shaping the future of girls’ football in Ireland.
“Year two is about deepening our impact across the country,” said Pearl Slattery, Programme Coordinator with the FAI. “This programme will help provide a better environment for girls across Ireland by offering workshops, mentorship, and practical support for parents and coaches to keep the girls in sport. We’re excited to bring even more tailored support to communities, helping girls stay engaged and confident in their football journey.”
“The response to In Her Boots from hundreds of young girls and their parents has been very encouraging, and we look forward to the programme growing significantly,” added Caroline Cummins, Sponsorship Manager at Aviva. “We’re proud to support this vital initiative, helping to close the gender gap in sport and ensuring girls have the tools, role models, and encouragement they need to thrive in football.”
Now entering its second year, In Her Boots continues to build momentum as a model for how partnership, education, and community investment can help girls stay active, confident, and connected to sport for life.
