It’s the biggest tennis tournament to be staged on the island of Ireland and Irish players are showing the benefits of a rarely gained home advantage at the AIG Irish Open Tennis Championship taking place at the Fitzwilliam Club in Dublin.
Simon Carr (pictured above in a great action shot from Oisin Keniry of Inpho) went into the tournament ranked 1167 in the world and splitting his game time between the Senior and Junior circuits.
Yesterday though he upset the second seed and world number 406 Hugo Grenier 7-6, 6-4.
Sinead Lohan went one better beating the number one seed in the Women’s tournament. Ranked number eight among Collegiate players in the US last year Lohan has already won two ITF tournaments, both in Portugal and the Waterford native could give Irish fans something to really cheer about in this €25,000 event.
AIG Insurance came on board this year as the new sponsor of the Championship, which continues today and runs through to Saturday.
AIG has a long association with tennis in Ireland, enjoying an ongoing relationship with Tennis Ireland and having previously sponsored the Irish Davis Cup Team.
