Tonight in Cardiff the Republic of Ireland Women’s team take to the field against Wales in the first leg of a play-off to determine which of us will go to the Euro 2025 Finals in Switzerland.
The sides will then complete the job at the Aviva Stadium next Tuesday in what promises to be the biggest Women’s game on Irish soil ever.
When the team qualified for the World Cup in 2023 they did so in Glasgow but now there is an opportunity to finish the job at home in front of a crowd that could break all records. Over 20,000 tickets have already been sold for the game in the Aviva Stadium and a positive result tonight will set interest alight.
The FAI have been leaning back into history with this interview of Nora ‘no-no’ McHugh who swapped the camogie fields of Oranmore to captain the first Irish team to play football internationally against Wales back in 1973.
It is great to draw the threads together of where sport was and where it is today.
If you have not been able to travel to Cardiff, make sure you have voted in time and can settle down in front of RTÉ2’s coverage tonight hopefully setting up a night to remember next week.
Good luck alos to the Northern Ireland Women’s team who take on the tough task of getting past Norway in their play off, again tonight and next Tuesday.
And finally, congratulations to Katie McCabe who has been shortlisted as a nominee for the FIFA Women’s International Team of the Year.
