Irish equine technology company Equine MediRecord has been selected to provide its welfare and compliance platform for this month’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Keeneland in Kentucky.

The 43rd staging of the Championships takes place on October 30 and 31, bringing many of the world’s leading thoroughbreds to Keeneland for two days of racing featuring 14 Grade 1 contests and more than $34 million in purses and awards.

Equine MediRecord’s technology will help manage veterinary, welfare, and regulatory requirements for horses competing at the meeting.

The platform securely records a horse’s veterinary history while supporting compliance processes for medication and anti-doping regulations.

The system developed for the Breeders’ Cup will inform trainers travelling from around the world of the safety and integrity requirements that apply to their horses, including regulations introduced by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority in the United States.

It will also manage the documentation required before horses are cleared to compete.

The deal marks another major international showcase for an Irish company that has built a growing presence in the global racing industry.

Equine MediRecord’s client base includes 1/ST Racing, the British Horseracing Authority, Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and Racing Victoria.

This will not be its first involvement at Keeneland, as the company previously supplied its technology to the Breeders’ Cup when the Championships were staged there in 2020.

Keeneland is hosting the meeting for the fourth time, following previous editions in 2015, 2020 and 2022.

Equine MediRecord is now part of Business Infusions, an international equine veterinary technology business. The Irish company received a multimillion-dollar investment from Merit Holdings in 2022 before subsequently joining the Business Infusions group.

“It is a privilege to work with the Breeders’ Cup again for this year’s running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships in Keeneland,” said Equine MediRecord CEO Pierce Dargan.

“We believe our Equine MediRecord system has a role to play in the movement to help ensure that our children will be able to enjoy horse racing the way we have for generations.

“To be a part of that work is an honour and highly rewarding.”

Equine MediRecord’s international growth is another example of Irish sports technology finding a market well beyond home shores.

It is also operating in an area of increasing importance to racing.

Animal welfare, traceability, integrity, and medication controls are no longer issues solely for veterinary and regulatory teams. They are central to racing’s reputation, its relationship with the public and ultimately its ability to maintain the confidence of commercial partners and supporters.

Having Irish-developed technology embedded at one of the biggest meetings in world racing is therefore a significant calling card for Equine MediRecord, particularly as regulators and race organisers place greater emphasis on proving that welfare and integrity standards are being consistently applied.

Sport for Business Perspective

Irish Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Horses have a powerful record at this effective ‘World Cup’ of Racing.  Reaching the same level in our sports tech sector is a major boost.

Equine MediRecord has identified a difficult industry problem that technology can make easier, more transparent, and more consistent to solve.

That puts it into an increasingly valuable part of the sports business ecosystem. Governing bodies and event organisers are being asked not merely to have strong welfare and integrity policies but to demonstrate that those policies are being implemented and recorded.

A place at the Breeders’ Cup gives an Irish-developed platform another very visible international proof point.
