European rugby returns with two major home fixtures, Dublin club championships reach their climax, the League of Ireland title race intensifies and there are attractive contests in basketball and hockey.
From a potentially emotional night at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh to the Dublin Senior Football Championship Final at Parnell Park, this weekend offers plenty to draw supporters through the turnstiles.
Here are our seven selections for live sporting action across Ireland.
1. Munster v Racing 92 – A European Night with Added Emotion
Saturday, 8:00 PM | SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork
Munster’s Investec Champions Cup opener against Racing 92 promises to be one of the weekend’s most emotional sporting occasions. Played ten years after the death of Anthony Foley, who passed away in Paris ahead of a fixture against the same French opposition, the evening will include a series of tributes to the former Munster captain and coach. Players will wear commemorative jackets, captains will exchange number-eight jerseys, and supporters will applaud in the eighth minute. With European rugby returning to Cork’s largest stadium, the event combines sporting ambition, history and occasion.
2. Connacht v Saracens – European Heavyweights Come to Galway
Saturday, 5:30 PM | Dexcom Stadium, Galway
Few places offer a better way to experience European rugby than Galway when Connacht play at home. Saracens bring international pedigree and a formidable European reputation to the Dexcom Stadium for the opening round of the Investec Champions Cup. The English visitors will provide an immediate measure of Connacht’s ambitions in a demanding pool that also includes Toulouse and La Rochelle. With the redeveloped stadium helping to open a new chapter in the province’s history, this fixture should deliver atmosphere and high-quality rugby. A Saturday evening under the lights against one of Europe’s best-known clubs is an attractive sporting proposition.
3. St Patrick’s Athletic v Shelbourne – Dublin Derby with Title Implications
Friday, 8:00 PM | Richmond Park, Dublin
Richmond Park should be rocking on Friday evening as St Patrick’s Athletic welcome Shelbourne in a Dublin derby carrying considerable weight in the Premier Division run-in. Stephen Kenny’s side remain in the title conversation and know that maximum points are essential as the season approaches its conclusion. Shelbourne arrive after scoring five against Sligo Rovers last weekend and will relish the chance to disrupt their neighbours’ ambitions. With Pats facing a demanding run of fixtures and their manager publicly questioning the schedule, tension runs high around this meeting. A strong choice for anyone who enjoys close-quarters League of Ireland football.
4. St Vincent’s v Naomh Jude – Dublin Camogie Final
Friday, 7:30 PM | Parnell Park, Dublin
Dublin camogie shares centre stage on Friday night as St Vincent’s and Naomh Jude contest the PTSB Senior 1 Championship Final. Vincent’s are chasing a remarkable fifth successive title after dominating much of the past decade, but Jude’s have been their most persistent challengers. The Templeogue club won championships in 2018, 2020 and 2021, and captain Sinéad Nolan believes her side has the quality to end the Marino club’s winning sequence. With the Maura Brady Cup at stake, this promises to be a fiercely competitive contest and an excellent showcase for the strength of Dublin’s club game. Watch out for Rachel Sheehan from Off The Ball in the Jude’s line-up, and Luke Adams from Irish Life on the sideline as part of their backroom team.
5. Railway Union v Loreto – Women’s Hockey at Its Best
Saturday, 1:40 PM | Park Avenue, Sandymount, Dublin
Two of the leading names in Irish women’s hockey meet at Park Avenue on Saturday afternoon in a fixture that could have an important bearing on the early EY Hockey League standings. Railway Union have made a perfect start to the campaign and arrive as league leaders, while Loreto will be determined to halt their rivals’ momentum. Railway have won three consecutive EY Hockey League titles, and meetings between these Dublin clubs rarely lack intensity. As the international game continues to develop and club hockey lays its foundations, this is an excellent opportunity to experience elite women’s sport in a welcoming, accessible setting.
6. SETU Waterford Wildcats v FloMAX Liffey Celtics – Basketball’s Early Pace-Setters
Saturday, 5:30 PM | Mercy College, Waterford
A top-of-the-table meeting in the Domino’s Women’s Super League brings unbeaten FloMAX Liffey Celtics to Waterford to face the early league leaders. The Wildcats have impressed in their opening fixtures, with Irish international Sarah Hickey already scoring 61 points in two games. Liffey Celtics have also won twice, with Brooke Kane hitting 30 points against Cavan Eagles last weekend. Both teams have genuine ambitions of challenging for honours this season, making this a fascinating early measure of their respective strengths. Mercy College should provide an energetic backdrop to a contest featuring some of Irish domestic basketball’s most exciting players.
7. Castleknock v Cuala – Dublin Senior Football Championship Final
Sunday, 4:15 PM | Parnell Park, Dublin
Sunday’s PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Football Championship Final provides a fitting conclusion to the weekend. Cuala are bidding to reclaim the county title they won in 2024, a triumph that launched an extraordinary journey to Leinster and All-Ireland club honours. Their semi-final win over reigning champions Ballyboden St Enda’s showed their resilience, while Castleknock put on an impressive attacking display to beat Thomas Davis. Con O’Callaghan, Charlie McMorrow, Mick Fitzsimons and Eoin Kennedy are among the influential figures in the Cuala side, and Castleknock star Ciaran Kilkenny hopes to lead his club to its first senior county title. Expect a passionate crowd, fine football and a genuine championship occasion.
