The Irish Sailing Foundation has confirmed a €500,000 contribution to Irish Sailing’s Performance Pathway in 2025, underlining the growing role of charitable and donor-backed funding in supporting Ireland’s high-performance sailing system.
The contribution includes €400,000 in direct funding, alongside more than €100,000 in accommodation and transport benefits provided through Foundation donors. Operating independently of Irish Sailing, the Foundation exists solely to raise charitable funding in support of the Performance Pathway, complementing public investment and family contributions.
The Performance Pathway supports young Irish sailors as they develop high-performance skills while balancing education and personal development. It operates on a blended funding model, with core support from Sport Ireland, the Irish Sailing Foundation and participants’ families. In 2025, the Foundation accounted for approximately 30 per cent of the programme’s overall budget.
Since its establishment in 2015, with advice and assistance from 2Into3, the Irish Sailing Foundation has invested almost €3 million in the development of people, programmes and facilities supporting Irish Sailing. That investment has benefitted more than 300 athletes, supporting progression from youth pathways through to Olympic-level competition.
Foundation funding has enabled sustained access to world-class coaching and specialist sport science expertise, including physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, meteorology, nutrition and data analysis. This integrated approach has strengthened the performance environment and contributed to improved outcomes across the pathway.
In addition to programme funding, the Foundation has provided direct athlete support in the form of bursaries, logistical assistance and equipment purchase, helping to reduce financial barriers at critical stages of development.
Capital investment has also formed part of the funding strategy. Foundation support has contributed to projects such as Performance HQ in Dún Laoghaire, pictured above, alongside the acquisition of support boats and specialist equipment, enhancing training infrastructure and long-term performance capacity.
From a donor perspective, the Foundation was supported by 20 donors during 2025, including contributors from Ireland, the United States and the United Kingdom. Eight donors joined the Patron Programme, committing €50,000 annually for five years. This long-term commitment is designed to provide greater financial certainty for the Performance Pathway and future Olympic campaigns. The Foundation has set an ambition to double its donor base in 2026.
Looking ahead, the Irish Sailing Foundation continues to pursue funding support for a proposed High-Performance Headquarters in Dún Laoghaire Harbour, planned as part of the wider National Watersports Campus. With detailed plans already in place, the project is now seeking government backing to advance the facility as a world-class base for Irish sailing.
While high performance remains a central focus, the Foundation continues to balance elite investment with broader participation and inclusion initiatives, reflecting a funding model that aligns donor support with clearly defined sporting and social outcomes.
