Public Relations and Media Officer – United Rugby Championship
This person will deliver key media events with the aim of being the most talked about rugby competition in the world by forging proactive relationships with journalists, collaborating with clubs and maximising access to talent and activating key campaigns as part of the company’s new communications strategy.
Travel and weekend work will be expected as part of the role but flexible working conditions will be afforded.
The Person
Passionate and knowledgeable about the rugby industry with experience in a PR agency or similar communications role within sports. Track record of increasing media coverage for a brand/organisation, experienced in dealing in dynamic environments with multiple stakeholders and managing brand ambassadors and similar talent.
Must possess sharp written skills, an ability to work up and down within a team, a strong understanding of tailoring messages to different platforms and groups with a keen eye for spotting trends, market gaps and opportunities in non-traditional sports outlets to extend coverage. The role will involve event and match-day responsibilities while contributing to URC’s relationship with a world-renowned sports entertainment PR agency. Opportunities to up skill and work on career highlight projects will be provided.
You will be comfortable working to tight deadlines, understanding of our diverse stakeholder group and will embrace company values and make a positive impact on the team culture. You will have a minimum of 3 years’ management level experience in a PR/marketing agency or within media and will possess a third-level degree in keeping with the role described below.
Job Description
Public Relations
Proactive management of media opportunities (maximising time and use with talent) – into rugby press and lifestyle press
Management of key journalist / publisher relationships
Development of non-rugby industry database of media outlets and events to broaden the reach of tournament and raise profile of athletes and teams
Identification of PR opportunities for touring teams in Europe and South Africa
Overseeing digital interview opportunities on a weekly basis to maximise coverage for each game round
Working with communications executive on publicity campaigns for CSR activity
Working with counterparts in South Africa to promote and educate new audience about European based teams and athletes
Events
Media Day planning and delivery (with Events team)
Campaign delivery and support: Tournament final, Themed Rounds and key activations for broadcasters and partners
Awards: managing of media guestlist and club invitations, arranging media interview opportunities for winners and media, oversee voting and aggregation of data/stats for awards
Communications and Press Office Responsibilities
Point of call for day-to-day media enquiries with support of communications executive
Media sentiment analysis and application of data to drive improvements in communications delivery
Responsible for activating key elements of tournament communications strategy
Creation and revision of core information documents around tournament, media protocols and supporting materials for clubs around best practice
Media monitoring and tracking of key titles, journalists and industry topics to inform standing positions across a range of areas related to the tournament
Activating ‘combat communications’ by proactively engaging with agenda driven media
Identify best practice in areas of event delivery, media information support and distribution methods for clubs and tournament
Oversight of disciplinary communications with emphasis on clear and consistent delivery with communications executive
Regular liaison with all clubs in tournament on a monthly basis and via communications working group
Creation and distribution of weekly key communications document for clubs, unions and key internal stakeholders
Stakeholder Relations
Club day-to-day relationship management
POC with SA comms management (or agency)
Management of working group with club communications/media managers
Identifying areas to help support and upskill clubs to deliver greater value to their media stakeholders
Sponsorship Delivery
Identify PR opportunities for commercial partners
