The Kansas City Chiefs have taken another significant step in building their long-term presence in Ireland through a new partnership with Dublin City Council that will see American footballs made freely available at 20 public parks across the capital.
The initiative integrates the Chiefs into Dublin City Council’s existing Sport EQUIP Hub network, enabling users to borrow equipment free of charge through the Equip Sport mobile app. It represents the first time an NFL franchise has launched a dedicated Equip Sport programme at this scale in an international market.
The announcement is another illustration of how NFL clubs are moving to create permanent community programmes in priority international markets. Ireland has become one of the league’s most important overseas territories following the introduction of the NFL Global Markets Programme, the annual Aer Lingus College Football Classic, and last year’s first regular-season NFL game in Dublin.
By placing American footballs alongside existing community sports equipment in parks across the city, the Chiefs are lowering barriers to participation while creating another entry point for young people and families curious about the sport.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Daryl Barron welcomed the partnership.
“I am delighted to have this opportunity to partner with a global sports giant like the Kansas City Chiefs on this exciting initiative. With the annual US college football game that takes place each August in Dublin, and the first ever NFL game in Dublin last year, American football is growing in popularity in this country. This equipment is there to be used, so I would encourage all Dubliners to pay a visit to your local park and get practising your touchdowns.”
Chiefs President Mark Donovan described the initiative as creating lasting value rather than simply promoting the club.
“Equip Sport represents a new way for us to connect with communities across Ireland. By removing barriers to participation and making sports equipment freely available, we’re creating opportunities for more people to get active, spend time outdoors, and experience American football firsthand. As the Chiefs continue to deepen our commitment to Ireland, we’re excited to bring a program that delivers lasting value to communities while helping grow the game.”
The NFL has identified youth participation as a cornerstone of its international strategy, particularly through the rapid expansion of NFL Flag, which has also been selected as an Olympic sport for Los Angeles 2028.
NFL UK & Ireland General Manager Henry Hodgson said the Dublin programme builds on the momentum generated over the past year.
“This innovative community initiative by the Chiefs is an exciting addition to the NFL’s ongoing efforts to create more opportunities for young people in Ireland to discover and play flag football. Since the 2025 NFL Dublin Game, we have seen the appetite for young people participating in NFL Flag grow, and this initiative to help make the sport more accessible is critical to continue that.”
Participants simply locate a nearby Sport EQUIP station, download the Equip Sport app and unlock equipment free of charge. The app also includes introductory information and learning resources for those trying American football for the first time.
Sport for Business Perspective
This is a smart example of what modern sports internationalisation looks like. Rather than relying solely on major events, the Chiefs are investing in everyday participation infrastructure that keeps their brand visible in communities throughout the year.
The partnership also demonstrates the value of working alongside local authorities. Dublin City Council already had the Sport EQUIP network in place, allowing the Chiefs to plug into an established community asset rather than creating a standalone activation from scratch.
It is another indication of how international rights holders increasingly view Ireland as more than an event destination. Between the NFL Dublin Game, the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, the expansion of NFL Flag and now community participation programmes such as this, American football is establishing a genuine grassroots footprint alongside its growing commercial presence.
The timing is notable as preparations continue for this year’s Aer Lingus College Football Classic at the Aviva Stadium, ensuring that community engagement and elite events reinforce one another rather than existing as separate initiatives.
