Four years ago we were approached by TG4 to assist in producing a programme from Croke Park on the eve of the All Ireland Ladies Football Championship.

Our task was to identify two established and two up and coming female sports stars to join Gráinne McElwain in discussion about the waves that were being made around Women’s sport.

The two rising talents we picked to be part of the show were excellent on the night and Kellie Harrington and Rachael Blackmore have gone on to show that potential can indeed blossom into being the very best in the world.

Rachael Blackmore became the first woman to be top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival in March and then topped even that winning the Randox Aintree Grand National, the biggest race in the world only weeks later.

Kellie Harrington’s performance and personality have made her a star beyond compare on her return from Tokyo with Olympic Gold.

Yesterday Boylesports revealed that they are both vying for favouritism to win the RTÉ Sports Personality of the Year. With Katie Taylor continuing to hold us in thrall you could make a strong case that our three best-known sporting superstars by some margin are all women.

The event with TG4 predated the 20X20 campaign but it was already evident that we had a rich pool of female talent coming through in sport.

It is something special to see just how far they have come.
