Kildare footballer Róisín Byrne has scored a win for all players returning from serious injury by winning the Croke Park/LGFA Player of the Month award for January 2023.

Having recovered from shoulder issues to be named on the TG4 Intermediate Team of the Championship in 2020, the 28-year-old Byrne suffered anterior cruciate knee ligament damage in June 2021.

It’s been a long road back but she appears to have lost none of her attacking instincts, playing a key role for Kildare in their impressive start to the 2023 Lidl National League Division 3 campaign.

In January, she marked her return with a haul of 1-5 against Down before following up a week later with a tally of 2-5 in victory over Longford.

Her scoring form continued with seven crucial points against Clare, and she featured against Louth on Sunday as Kildare suffered a first defeat of the League campaign.

Kildare now find themselves in joint second place in the Division 3 standings, alongside Wexford and Down on nine points, ahead of next Sunday’s crucial fixture away to Offaly.

Róisín was presented with her award yesterday afternoon by Ina Lazar, Sales Manager at The Croke Park hotel.
