Leona Maguire has made history by becoming the first player from Ireland to compete in the Solheim Cup.
The 26-year-old was yesterday announced as one of the six captain’s picks by Catriona Matthew, after an impressive run of form in both America and Europe.
The Team Ireland golfer will compete in the 17th Solheim Cup between the United States of America and Europe at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio on the weekend of September 4th to 6th.
The tournament will be shown live in full on Sky Sports.
“I think Leona has been playing really well all year and will be the first player from Ireland to play in it,” said Matthew.
“She’s a really solid player with a great match play record as an amateur and was world No 1 amateur for a couple of years, so I think she was an obvious choice.”
Speaking after Maguire’s inclusion in the team was confirmed this morning, Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly said it was great news for Irish golf.
“Leona has always represented Ireland with distinction throughout her amateur and professional career. We are delighted to see her selected for next month’s matches.”
“A three-time Curtis Cup player and a two-time Olympian, Leona continues to fly the flag for Ireland on the international stage.”
“Irish women’s golf is in a brilliant place, as Lauren Walsh and Annabel Wilson compete in the Curtis Cup this week. Hopefully the next generation will be inspired by what happens in the coming weeks.”
