Rhys McClenaghan became a three-time European Champion in the Pommel Horse at the Artistic Gymnastics European Championships over the weekend.

“This is a very proud moment for Rhys, now a triple European Champion,” said National Coach Luke Carson.

“The goal was to come here and showcase Olympic level gymnastics, that was certainly achieved. Now we recoup, re-energise and work towards final improvements for the Olympic Games.”

“It was a smooth clean performance by Rhys, very professional and well composed in securing his title and continuing his preparation for the Paris Olympics,” added Gymnastics Ireland Performance and Technical Director Sally Johnson.

“A 3rd European title to add to his collection – absolutely superb performance yet again from Rhys as the countdown to Paris 2024 continues,” said Gymnastics Ireland CEO Ciaran Gallagher.

“Huge congratulations to Rhys and our national coach Luke Carson on another historic result. Thanks also to Sport Ireland and Sport NI for their continued support of our gymnasts and our Performance programme”

Dominick Cunningham added to the feel good sense around the sport here when finishing fifth in the Senior Vault Finals at the same Championships.

The Women’s event will take place later this week from 2nd – 5th May. Senior gymnasts Blathnaid Higgins, Emma Slevin, Halle Hilton, Lily Russell and Junior gymnast Mimi Moloney are all set to compete with the action live again on Eurovision Sport TV.
