McGregor April 2016 Conor McGregor is back on the card for UFC200 in July. A tweet less than an hour ago from his personal account broke the news to his fans and brings to an end a week of madness for the sport’s biggest star.  

At the end of last week he tweeted respect for the fighters who had turned up for the promotional spectacle but with the cutting barb that none of them had made $400 Million for the company in the past eight months.

The fight game, in whatever form, has always been about hyperbole and braggadocio. McGregor is a master of both, and has the talent and discipline to get to the top on merit as well as soundbite.

We cannot forget that only two weeks ago a young man lost his life in the sport in Dublin and yet the world moves on.

Love him, loath him or like most lie somewhere in between, Conor McGregor is at this moment the most famous Irish sports star on the planet. He is representing us as a nation in the minds eye of a global population that far exceeds our own.

It’s different but then again, as we start off on the next 100 years after the first steps towards nationhood, things that stay the same forever are generally in need of being overthrown every once in a while…
