Leinster Rugby have confirmed that Noel McNamara will become the province’s head coach on 1 July 2027.
He will succeed Leo Cullen at the conclusion of the current season, bringing a familiar figure back to Dublin with an enhanced international coaching reputation.
The appointment, announced on Tuesday, clarifies one of the most important leadership transitions in Irish professional rugby.
McNamara returns from Union Bordeaux-Bègles, where he served as attack coach and contributed to the French club’s back-to-back Investec Champions Cup successes.
He worked with Leinster from 2016 to 2021, holding roles including that of academy manager and Leinster ‘A’ head coach.
He also guided Ireland’s Under-20 side to a Grand Slam in 2019, establishing a reputation for developing young players before moving into professional coaching roles overseas.
His subsequent experience included two seasons with the Sharks in South Africa, where he worked as attack and backs coach, before joining Bordeaux.
McNamara will remain with the French club for the rest of the 2026/27 season before formally taking up his new position.
The announcement ends speculation over Cullen’s successor and gives Leinster several months to plan the transition.
“We are delighted to welcome Noel McNamara as the new Head Coach of Leinster Rugby in 2027,” said Leinster CEO Shane Nolan.
“Noel has a long association with the club and emerged as our preferred candidate very early in the process. His transition into the role will be seamless, and we look forward to welcoming him here next July after this season reaches its conclusion.”
“Along with a number of key stakeholders, we set out clear criteria when we began this process to try to ensure that we secured a Head Coach that combined a strong understanding of Leinster and Irish rugby with a track record of success,” added Leinster Chief Operating Officer, Guy Easterby.
“I believe that Noel is the right man to take on this responsibility from Leo and to build on the incredible job that he has done over the past 11 years as we continue to strive for excellence in everything we do.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank UBB President Laurent Marti and Head Coach Yannick Bru for their understanding and professionalism in dealing with this matter. I am also very grateful for the support of Shane Nolan, the Professional Games Board here in Leinster and IRFU Performance Director, David Humphreys throughout this process.”
“Noel brings a wealth of coaching experience, strong leadership qualities and a proven track record of developing players and coaching successful teams,” said IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys.
“He has a deep understanding of Irish rugby, and I’m looking forward to working with him to ensure Leinster’s continued success, while supporting the development of players for the Ireland national team.”
“I am delighted that I am returning to Leinster Rugby as Head Coach in 2027,” added McNamara himself.
“This is one of the most prestigious roles in world rugby, and it is an honour to be given this responsibility.”
“I am very grateful to UBB and in particular Laurent Marti and Yannick Bru for supporting me in availing of this opportunity. We have a very exciting season ahead with UBB, and I am fully focused on that before moving back to Leinster next summer.”
Sport for Business Perspective
The province operates one of European club rugby’s most established sporting and commercial programmes, supported by strong attendances, major sponsorship relationships and a highly productive player-development system.
McNamara’s background offers continuity with Leinster’s academy structures while bringing experience from France and South Africa.
The appointment also reinforces the importance of succession planning. By confirming the transition well in advance, Leinster can provide certainty to players, staff and commercial partners while allowing Cullen to complete the current campaign.
The ultimate measure of success will be whether McNamara can sustain Leinster’s domestic strength and translate its resources into further European achievement.
