The inaugural Peter Norman Humanitarian Award (Ireland) will be presented this year to a sportsperson in Ireland who has exhibited an exceptional humanitarian act through sport.

Peter Norman was an Australian athlete at the 1968 Mexico Olympics who wore the badge of the Olympic Project for Human Rights in solidarity with the African American Athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos in what remains the most iconic picture of athlete protest ever taken.

Smith and Carlos held black-gloved hands in the air during the national anthem of the USA in protest at the denial of the human and civil rights of their people in their homeland.

Norman died in Australia in 2006 at the age of 64. Smith and Carlos both delivered eulogies at his funeral.

Norman’s legacy as an athlete and an advocate for human rights is celebrated worldwide. As a sign of respect, Athletics Australia and USA Track and Field adopted October 9 as Peter Norman Day.

Athletics Australia inaugurated the Peter Norman Humanitarian Award in 2018 to honour Norman’s legacy as an athlete and an advocate for human rights.

This new Irish element of the Award will be presented on October 9 in partnership with the Embassy of Australia.

If you wish to nominate a person and explain your choice, please do so in less than two hundred words and send it to kenmccue@gmail.com quoting Peter Norman Award in the Subject line.

The call for nominations is now open and will close at noon on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

An international committee will select the award winner.
