In a decision which heralds growing liberalisation of gambling laws across a number of states, the NFL has decided to allow some very limited promotion of casino gambling within programme advertising and stadium promotion in certain limited areas.
The relationship between US Sport and gambling has always been very frosty with none of the major codes or the USPGA permitting any form of promotion, up until now.
Betting on NFL matches is still strictly prohibited but does of course take place both illegally across the US and legally online and in many other countries around the world. Many would argue a large element of the sports popularity is based on its suitability for some form or other of gaming or betting.
Teams like the Philadelphia Eagles or the reigning Super Bowl Champions the New York Giants are expected to make an additional €5 million from the trial period which runs for the next two seasons.
