Team Ireland partner and job site, Indeed, has revealed new insights on the Irish public’s online support for the Olympics, which doubled in the 24 hours after Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy’s gold medal in the Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls.

According to an analysis by Olytico, there is a close correlation between the number of athletes competing from Munster, at 25 per cent, and the support hailing from the province, which is 21 per cent. Three of the medals coming home will be to a small parish of Aughadown outside Skibbereen, but the support for the lads has come from every corner.

Two of the Women’s Four team coming home to Galway will have a medal and Connacht fans represent nine per cent of the support.

Online support from Connacht saw an increase of three per cent since Mona McSharry’s performance earlier this week.

In contrast, Ulster’s online support is lower for the province with two per cent showing support for the athletes, despite their having 23 per cent of the athletes competing at the Games. That is likely to change once Kurt Walker and Aidan Walsh look to advance to a medal.

Leinster is dominating the support accounting for 68 per cent of online support, even though less than half (49%) of Team Ireland’s athletes originate from Leinster.

It really is a case of everyone throwing their weight behind the athletes competing for us regardless of any county rivalry.

Indeed partnered with the Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) in April 2019 to become a sponsor of Team Ireland for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics through its campaign #TalentUnleashed.

Daniel Corcoran, Vice President of Strategy and Operations at Indeed said “The postponement and unknown of the Games has made it an exceptionally difficult year for our elite athletes who dedicate their lives to their chosen sport and have had to mentally prepare for the biggest competition in their sporting careers.”

“We are extremely proud to be supporting Team Ireland and we are encouraging everyone across Ireland to show their support for these incredible athletes as we watch them unleash their talent on the global stage this summer.”

The company has released a suite of Instagram and other social media filters which can be used for encouragement and celebration, just as David Gillick did from Tokyo…
