UNWELCOME MEMORIES OF TOKYO

It felt like we were in a time warp when news came through of a breaking story from the Australian Women’s Water Polo team, that two players had tested positive for Covid and were isolating away from their team mates.

There is no indication that any more stringent measures will be imposed either by teams or the olympic authorities and the Australians said it was treating these cases just k like any other bug such as the flu which would impact on performance and be contagious.

No masks though, just the simple common sense exhortation to stay at home, or we guess, in your room in the village, if you are feeling unwell.

FAREWELL ANDY MURRAY

There are those for whom an event like tennis is an outlier at the Olympics, reasoning that if it is not the pinnacle of the sport then it should not be in, taking the spotlight away from others.

They will have their heads in their hands after yesterday’s confirmation that Andy Murray will be retiring from the sport completely after his last game.

It will likely be the headline in all British media every time he serves or sneezes at the games but he is a ‘national treasure’ even if it will be the Union Jack that is raised rather than the Scottish Saltire should he make it onto a podium.

31 OF 32 COUNTIES REPRESENTED

We asked yesterday which was the one county that did not have any olympic representative and in fact it turns out to be two. Leitrim and Westmeath are the two who will have to cheer for Team ireland as a whole but without any local heroes to march down main street on their return from the games.

Today’s teaser on a similar theme is to see can you guess the nine counties whose hopes and dreams rest on a single pair of shoulders. Two of them in particular will cause a surprise.
