A cultural and sporting exchange between Ireland and Palestine, months in the making, has been thrown into disarray following the Irish Immigration Service’s decision to refuse visas to 47 Palestinian youths and coaches who were due to arrive later this month.
The group, organised by GAA Palestine, was set to arrive on July 18 and participate in a nationwide tour that would include visits to GAA clubs, cultural sites, and host families across the country.
A tour of Croke Park led by GAA President Jarlath Burns was also on the agenda.
The initiative, supported by over 100 Irish families and numerous GAA clubs, aimed to foster cultural understanding and sporting links between communities.
However, with just over a week to go, all 47 visa applications — including those of 33 children aged between 9 and 16 — were rejected. According to correspondence seen by the organisers, the rejections were based on “insufficient documentation,” specifically in relation to itineraries and financial details.
That rationale has been strongly disputed by GAA Palestine.
“Seven days before these young boys and girls were meant to leave the West Bank, we are told that additional documentation is now required — documentation that was already provided or never previously requested,” said Steven Redmond, Chairperson of GAA Palestine.
The group submitted its visa applications in mid-May, including detailed plans for travel, accommodation, club visits, and cultural activities. Organisers say they complied with all stated requirements and had received no indication that further documentation would be necessary until the refusals arrived.
“We went as far as sending a volunteer to the West Bank to assist with additional documentation that was requested as part of our application,” added Redmond. “Volunteers across Ireland are just utterly and completely devastated after all the work and effort put into making this tour happen.”
GAA Palestine has called on the Department of Justice and the Irish Government to urgently review their decision and work with the group to salvage the visit or ensure that future exchanges are facilitated.
The cancellation is being described as a “heartbreaking” setback by volunteers and host families who had spent months preparing for the group’s arrival. GAA clubs had engaged in fundraising and local outreach to support the initiative, which has now been postponed indefinitely.
Despite the disappointment, GAA Palestine says it remains committed to working collaboratively with Irish authorities to resolve the issue and continue its mission of building bridges through sport.
“We kindly ask the Government to partner with us in making this happen,” Redmond said. “This was more than a tour — it was a chance to create understanding, solidarity, and shared joy through Gaelic games. We remain hopeful that this setback will not deter us.”
The Irish Immigration Service has not yet commented publicly on the matter.
When we wrote originally about this story we received a number of complaints, all very similar and perhaps generated by AI, claiming that we were being anti-semitic and that those who were coming were “the children of Hamas child murderers and rapists”
If those who sent those messages are reading these and feel like expressing those sentiments again, I would only ask that they check themselves and really consider whether hatred ever gets you to a better place in the world.
