We are joined this morning by European and World Champion boxer Kellie Harrington. Away from the ring Harrington is a champion of her local community and works part-time as a cleaner in a local psychiatric hospital.
She has been working longer hours there through the period of COVID-19 and that’s where the bell rings on our interview.
We chat about the feeling of being useful that comes from her work; when she was tested for the virus as a frontline worker; and the pain of not being able to get close up with patients she has known a long time.
We move on then to what the training has been like over this period and the desire to get back in the ring and sparring.
It would have been a mental boost to have secured qualification before everything shut down but that was not to be.
We look back on what that London tournament was like, with Kellie due to box on St Patrick’s Day before it was ended prematurely and what the timeframe is now for qualification to make it to Tokyo.
