The world of Pay TV in Irish sport came under the microscope again this morning with Rob Hartnett from Sport for Business joining Kieran Cuddihy on Newstalk Breakfast to discuss the costs and trends in this area.
Virgin Sport’s announcement that it would be placing Champions’ League coverage on its new Virgin Sport Channel means that signing up to all the potential channels on which live sport will be shown in Ireland this year could come to €2,000.
eir Sport will show all the Champions’ League matches through their carrying of BT Sport and yesterday Virgin Media’s language had switched from the use of the word exclusive to focusing on the Irish based production and emphasis, albeit with Scottish legend Graeme Souness as the main analyst.
RTÉ will retain non-exclusive rights to Tuesday games which will be boosted by the warmth of the World cup and seeing so many of the stars back in action.
One additional area of expense though for the obsessed soccer fan will be the emergence of another separate OTT Channel, Eleven Sports, which has bought the rights to Spanish and Italian League Football in the UK and Ireland and will be launching its new channel next month.
