Sport features prominently on the short list of projects which will be voted on by the social media public to win part of a total of €125,000 in grants from the Coca Cola ‘thank you’ fund.
The company created the fund last year to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the company and has rolled it over into another run this year following an enormous response from communities across the country.
Aughrim Rugby Club; Ballina Boxing Club; Ballyduff Athletics Club; the British Amateur Gymnastics Association for projects in Northern Ireland; the Excel Gymnastics Club; Castleknock and Loughgiel Shamrocks GAA clubs; the Golden Falls Waterski Club; The Irish Olympic Handball Association for the promotion of Street Handball; Munster Wheelchair Rugby and the Rebel Wheelers; Omagh Thunder Basketball Club; Spraoi agus Sport; the Stella Maris Rowing Club and the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club have all made it through to the final voting list of 45.
Supporters of these and other non sporting but community based activity projects are now being encouraged to vote through facebook.  This public vote will have equal weight with the deliberations of an expert judging panel in determining the destination of the funding.
Last year, Titans Basketball Club, Tralee Bay Sailing Club and Special Olympics Ireland won grants of either €10,000 or €5,000.
