The scholarships will be across a range of subjects including computer science, management and business. Degrees courses will be delivered online and at regional sites and will be awarded by the University of London. Bernard Brogan and Tommy Bowe (pictured) were at the launch.
“As the largest primary school teacher provider in the country, we fully recognise the amount of time that teachers, coaches and students put into achieving sporting excellence, and the scholarships we are providing intend to provide the balance and flexibility for those athletes who are also seeking excellence off the field”, said Dr. Rowland, president of Hibernia College.
The provision of sporting scholarships was first introduced to Ireland at UCD as far back as 1979.
Since then a significant number of famous names have availed of the service there including Brian O’Driscoll and Rob Kearney in Rugby, Alan Brogan, Stephen Lucey and Rena Buckley in GAA, Derval O’Rourke and James Nolan in Athletics and Peter Lawrie in golf.
To date 850 students have benefitted from the UCD sports scholarship programme which includes access to the sporting facilities at the Belfield campus, as well as the sports science and nutrition expertise of the UCD Institute for Sport and Health.
Hibernia College has an existing relationship with sport through support provided to the Player Services Programme of the Irish Rugby Union Players Association.
