Supermacs is exiting its 20-year partnership with All Ireland Camogie Champions Galway but it is doing so in a classy way.
The brand, still privately owned by Pat and Una McDonagh is firmly rooted in its Galway heartland and has been a major supporter of sport across the county.
Its relationship with the Men’s teams in Football and Hurling goes back to 1991 and will have a major boost this year with new manager Henry Shefflin attracting serious renewed interest in the small ball game.
In Camogie, it has been on the shirtfront since 2000, a period in which the County has won three All Ireland titles.
It also backs the Galway Ladies Football team that made it to the All Ireland Final itself in 2019.
Galway Camogie is understood to have a replacement lined up and it is probable that this was agreed prior to yesterday’s announcement of the parting.
Supermacs will be staying involved with Women’s sport through the tenth year of partnership with Galway WFC in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League.
“Both myself and Una have been delighted to have been associated with various Galway Camogie teams for over 20 years,” said McDonagh in a statement issued yesterday.
“We have seen some outstanding performances with the All Ireland wins of 2013, 2019 and 2021 being the highlights. We would like to thank all the players, coaches, managers and their families for their continued support over the years.”
“Whilst there have been some tough days along the way, each and every team, from under-age to senior, that puts on a jersey deserves respect and credit for their commitment.”
“We wish them and their management teams continued success over the coming seasons.”
Sport for Business Perspective
Breaking up is never easy but this appears to have been very amicable and with a new partner waiting in the wings. The Women’s teams in counties pitching their own ideas and securing sponsorship in their own right is something that will become more apparent over the coming years.
