Interim coaches are very much in vogue at the moment and while Manchester United have a shortlist of five, Cricket Ireland has appointed David Ripley to manage the Senior men’s team on their tour of the United States and West Indies this winter.

The creation of the new interim coaching structure was precipitated by the departure of former Head Coach Graham Ford last week.

The new coaching structure will also be in charge for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in February next year.

Ripley is the former Head Coach of Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and former county cricketer for Northants. He succeeded the late David Capel as the club’s head coach in 2012 and recently stepped down from the role in September.

Under his tenure, Northants won the domestic Twenty20 title in 2013 and secured promotion into Division One of the County Championship at the end of the same campaign.

The Club won the T20 title again in 2016 and he has been widely praised for his innovative thinking in the shortest format of the game, and achieving silverware with limited resources.

He is joined on the interim ticket by Gary Wilson who is taking a three-month secondment from managing the North West Warriors, and Ryan Eagleson who is stepping in from managing the Shapoorji Pallonji Academy and the Ireland U19 side.

Cricket Ireland has begun the global search for a new full-time National Men’s Head Coach – initially on a three-year contract.

Meanwhile, over in the UAE, Ireland’s Women’s team took a major step towards progress in the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament today with a strong performance and win over the Netherlands.
