Ireland’s Women’s rugby team have been given a target date in their bid to make the Rugby World Cup Finals in 2022.
The postponed European Qualifier will take place in Parma, Italy between the 19th and 25th of September.
Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Spain will compete in a round-robin format with the winners securing their place for New Zealand next Autumn and the runner up progressing to a final Qualification tournament.
Ireland would be favourites to progress but it will not be an easy task. In the last three meetings between the sides in the six nations, Ireland has won two and lost one game to each of Italy and Scotland.
Since the Women’s Six Nations this year they have also lost top points scorer Hannah Tyrell who switched codes to play for the Dublin Ladies Football team.
“We are pleased to be able to share the details of the rescheduled Rugby World Cup 2021 Europe qualifier,” said Alison Hughes, Rugby World Cup 2021 Director Alison Hughes.
“The global disruption caused by COVID-19 has been frustrating for all unions still within the pathway but we appreciate the patience and flexibility shown by our unions and their efforts to ensure the qualification process can be completed safely and fairly. Next year’s Rugby World Cup is shaping up to be a truly spectacular event and we can’t wait to see the world’s top women’s 15s players take the stage in New Zealand.”
Ireland was the host nation for the last Women’s Rugby World Cup with games at UCD in Dublin and Queens University and the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast.
