Katie Taylor steps back into the ring tonight for her first competitive fight since winning Gold for Ireland at the London Olympics. She takes on Karolina Grazcyk of Poland in a repeat of the 2011 European Championship Final and will be supporting a night of ten men’s and three women’s national title fights at the National Stadium off Dublin’s South Circular Road.
The evening’s sport will be televised live on RTE Sport and is expected to attract a full house. Tickets were selling quickly during the week ranging in price from €30 to €50.
Michael Conlon and Adam Nolan from the Olympic team will both be in action and Ken Egan gives perhaps a final shot at reigning Champion Joe Ward in the Light Heavyweight division.
The evening should be a great celebration of Irish boxing and is sponsored by the Irish Daily Star.
Taylor moves into a more theatrical setting on Sunday evening when she fights German Champion Maike Kluners before a sold out crowd at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin.
Speaking to Michael O’Neill of Sports news Ireland recently the promoter of the fight Brian Peters said, “Katie will be immortalised for what she has achieved in her career. Even before London her achievements were extraordinary while the role she played in having women’s boxing included as an Olympic sport should never be forgotten.”
“She lifted the whole nation during the summer and in an age of fleeting celebrity she is truly a sporting icon and a national treasure. I’m delighted that people will have a chance to witness her talent first hand at a venue like the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.”
“We want to make this a family event for young and old because Katie is such an inspirational figure and as a nation we could not ask for a better role model for the next generation.”
