Rumours were circulating last night that Ireland is in line to host the 2013 European Women’s Boxing Championships.
The IABA’s is thought to have been the only formal proposal received by the European Boxing Confederation and an award of the event is likely to be made next month.
This will be the tenth hosting of the Championships and the first opportunity for Katie Taylor to defend a major title in front of a home crowd.
To win the right to host the tournament, likely to be held in October is a major coup for Ireland and cements the position of Irish Boxing as a real leader in the sport both in and out of the ring.
Government and commercial support will be required to host the event but the rewards are almost certain to make that a formality, even in difficult times.
