President Michael D. Higgins hosted members of Team Ireland in Áras an Uachtaráin last week, as over 90 Irish athletes prepare to take part in this year’s Gay Games in Paris.

The Gay Games which is being held for the 10th time this year was created in 1982 to promote the visibility of gay people in sport.

A celebration of diversity, 10,000 athletes from over 80 countries will travel to France in advance of the 10 day event.

“There can be no doubt that the Gay Games, originally termed the Gay Olympics, has been an inspiring leader in creating a fair and even playing field for sporting fans and embracing diversity in all its forms,” said President Higgins at Tuesday’s reception.

“All Equal” is the motto of the Games’ that focuses on inclusivity. Anybody is invited to participate, regardless of age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, health status or athletic ability.

36 different sports will be on display, including badminton, swimming, cycling & boxing, while there will also be 14+ cultural events taking place – ranging from orchestral concerts, to film exhibitions.

Teamwear.ie, a longstanding member of Sports for Business, have been involved in providing an official kit for Team Ireland with their Stanno Teamwear brand.

“We have been really pleased to help out the Ireland team and it was a special day to see the kit, with team sponsor The George at Aras an Uachtaráin last week,” Teamwear’s Declan Duffy told us this morning.

The Gay Games kick-off in Paris on August 4th.
