The Irish women’s hockey team will gain valuable experience in the coming days as it plays in the Investec London Cup, a warm up tournament for the London 2012 Olympics featuring five other teams all of whom have qualified for the games.  Ireland’s opponents in Pool A are the Netherlands and South Africa.
It has been a busy week for Investec, a company that employs 100 banking and capital markets experts at its IFSC operation in Dublin.  At the weekend the company completed the first year of a ten year renewal on sponsorship of the Investec Derby Festival at Epsom.  Ireland was well represented there as well with Aidan O’Brien training both the winners of the Investec Oaks and Derby.  The Festival was one of the main events in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Investec has become one of the most prominent sponsors in British and International sport.  It sponsors Team GB (pictured) in women’s hockey, a role fulfilled by Electric Ireland here and sponsorship of this tournament enables exposure and activation of that deal before the closure of the ‘sponsor’ window around the Olympic Games.
In addition to Hockey and Horseracing it also sponsors Tottenham Hotspur and invests in a major way in rugby, golf, cricket, sailing and the arts.  In Ireland the company is the principal sponsor of all the GAA county teams fielded by Monaghan GAA.  The Senior Ladies Football team won this year’s National League title.
Investec is one of the best international companies at activating its relationship with sport. As an example it sponsors a fashion site ‘whatbesttowear’ which it links to from sports pages offering advice for spectators at its major events.  It also links its sports together very well, showcasing the Team GB Hockey players at the recent Investec test match at Lords and raising the profile of all the sports in which it is involved.
