TG4 is once again positioning itself at the centre of the Christmas sporting calendar, with a festive schedule that underlines the broadcaster’s unique role in delivering premium live sport, original storytelling and cultural connection through Irish-language broadcasting.

From 19 December through to 4 January, the channel will combine elite rugby, high-stakes club championship action, original documentaries and a comprehensive review of the sporting year.

At the heart of the schedule is live rugby. TG4 will broadcast seven BKT United Rugby Championship fixtures, a run of games that reflects both the growing strength of the competition and TG4’s established position as a free-to-air home for URC coverage in Ireland. The line-up includes three Irish interprovincial derbies and a South African double header, ensuring strong audience appeal at a critical point in the season.

The festive programme begins on 19 December with Leinster v Ulster, before attention turns to South Africa the following day as the Stormers face the Lions and the Sharks meet the Bulls.

Connacht’s trip to the Dragons rounds out Round 7 coverage. The Christmas interprovincial theme continues on 27 December with Connacht v Ulster, while the New Year opens with another Sharks v Lions meeting and a Leinster v Connacht clash on 3 January.

Gaelic Games remains central to TG4’s identity, and the channel’s live coverage of the All-Ireland Club Championships continues to showcase the grassroots strength of Gaelic games.

Two major Sundays anchor the festive GAA schedule, with the AIB All-Ireland Club Hurling semi-finals live on 21 December, followed by the football semi-finals on 4 January.

Beyond live sport, TG4 is investing heavily in original documentary storytelling, using the Christmas period to premiere three new productions that blend sport, history and culture.

GAA 70’s – Réabhlóid Shóisialta, airing on 22 December, revisits a transformative decade for Gaelic football, tracing Galway’s battles with Dublin and the emergence of the iconic Dublin–Kerry rivalry, while examining the wider social change that surrounded the sport in the 1970s.

Looking at the image above, it is interesting to see the changes in sponsorship, though AIB remains a constant. Hibernian Insurance became Aviva. The other brands we can make out from the stands include Chrysler, B and I Ferries, Wavin Pipes, Paddy Whiskey, and Uniflo, which was a brand of motor oil.

Back to the sport, on St Stephen’s Day, Clann na nGael, Comórtas Peile 2025 brings viewers inside one of Ireland’s most distinctive sporting and cultural festivals, following the 2025 Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta hosted in Ráth Chairn and Áth Buí.

Later that evening, George Best i gCorcaigh marks 50 years since George Best’s spell with Cork Celtic, using rare archive material and new interviews to tell the story of how one of world football’s greatest talents briefly became part of the League of Ireland landscape.

Completing the festive offering is TG4’s annual look back at the sporting year. Cluichí na Bliana will revisit many of the defining GAA moments of 2025, from provincial finals through to All-Ireland deciders in hurling, football and ladies football, culminating in GAA – Cúil na Bliana on 27 December, celebrating the 30 best goals of the year as voted by the public.

Taken together, TG4’s Christmas schedule reflects a broad strategy that blends live rights, original production and cultural relevance. For Sport for Business, it offers a case study in how a public service broadcaster can drive audience engagement, support domestic competitions and deliver commercial value, all while reinforcing a distinct identity in an increasingly crowded sports media landscape.
