The joy of sport, the freedom of running and shouting in the open air. Rituals of childhood delivered by sport but restricted for so much of the past 18 months.
The period of the pandemic and associated lockdowns is 20 per cent of the lifetime of an eight-year-old and Iris Roulston was one of those released onto the pitch at Wexford Wanderers RFC yesterday as part of the local Bank of Ireland Leinster Rugby Summer Camp.
There are 37 camps taking place across the province. Half of them sold out within 24 hours of going on sale back in April.
“The biggest focus on our camps has always been to create a fun and safe environment,” said Camps Manager Ray McCabe.
“The kids have missed out on so much rugby throughout this pandemic, so we want to get the kids back into our clubs feeling part of it again, making new friends and doing all of this while playing rugby.”
“Just like last year’s camps, each venue will be Covid-19 compliant. All players and coaches will have to complete a daily health check form before taking part in any activities.”
“Every parent or guardian also received an information booklet prior to the camp starting with all the details and the protocols outlined.”
The sound of the summer will once again be the clatter of boots running out onto pitches, courts and any available space.
Sport for Business will be hosting an online mini-conference looking at the world of Children and Sport on September 9th.
