Each weekend we take a look back on the sporting highs from across Ireland and around the world through the medium of numbers.
268
History was made in the unusual surroundings of a November US Masters when Dustin Johnson shot the lowest four-round total in the history of the event, recording a 20 under Par score of 268 to win by five strokes. The previous record was 18 under par which had been set by Tiger Woods in 1997 and Jordan Spieth in 2015.
10
Johnston’s wasn’t the only number of major significance at the Masters with Tiger Woods recording a previously unimaginable 10 at the par 3 twelfth hole. He did recover in style though with five birdies in the final six holes to show that even nearly a quarter of a century after his emergence onto the golfing scene, he retains the box-office characteristics that make him so watchable.
33
The defeat to Wales was disappointing and highlighted again the chronic lack of goalscoring firepower in the Republic of Ireland ranks. It goes back longer than Stephen Kenny though with the team having played 41 games since the retirement of Robbie Keane in August 2016 and only finding the net 33 times.
7-54
The number of goals and points that were racked up in the two Leinster Men’s Football Semi-Finals on Sunday afternoon. Dublin put up 2-23 to Laois’s 0-07, while Meath and Kildare ended up with a 5-15 to 0-15 scoreline.
7
Lewis Hamilton was crowned the Formula 1 World Champion for the seventh time, matching the record of Michael Schumacher at a rain-soaked, slippery track in Istanbul. He had to start from sixth on the grid but Hamilton is in a different class and he has wrapped up the title with three races still to be run.
17
Katie Taylor’s win over Miriam Guttierez extended her unbeaten professional record to 17.
