Rowing Ireland has confirmed its squad for the 2025 World Rowing Championships in Shanghai (21–28 September), the first global event of the post-Paris cycle.
Framed as a transitional year, the selection balances proven internationals with emerging talent, while also recognising several Olympians who are taking time for personal and professional development between cycles.
Fresh from her European silver, Galway double Olympian Fiona Murtagh steps into the women’s single scull, bringing big-race pedigree to a highly competitive field.
Olympic champion Fintan McCarthy links up with Olympic bronze medallist Philip Doyle in the men’s double scull, a pairing rich in experience and racing craft. Paul O’Donovan did not make himself available for selection this time round as he works on his medical career development.
The women’s four returns with Olympians Natalie Long and Imogen Magner joined by newcomers Emma Waters, making her senior debut, and Aisling Hayes, who first appeared at the European Championships earlier this year.
In the men’s pair, Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan renew a partnership that impressed on the road to Paris. In contrast, the men’s quad features Adam Murphy, Andrew Sheehan and Brian Colsh with the significant addition of Olympian and World medallist Ronan Byrne.
World champion Siobhán McCrohan continues her campaign in the lightweight women’s single, while Olympians Zoë Hyde and Margaret Cremen reunite in the women’s double after their European and Lucerne outings.
Tokyo medallist Emily Hegarty teams up with double Olympian Aoife Casey in the women’s pair, adding further depth to the women’s sweep group.
Jake McCarthy, a European finalist earlier this season, goes in the lightweight men’s single. On the Para front, Paralympic medallist Tiarnán O’Donnell partners rising talent Sadhbh Ní Laoghaire following their podium success at the Lucerne International Regatta.
“This year presents a valuable opportunity to look ahead to Los Angeles 2028, to develop talent, and to solidify the high-performance culture within our team,” said Lead Coach Dominic Casey.
“We’re investing in both our people and our infrastructure, with ongoing enhancements at the National Rowing Centre to ensure our athletes have the best possible environment for growth. We’re proud of the depth and versatility of this team and confident they will represent Ireland with excellence on the world stage.”
“Supporting athletes through post-Olympic transition, investing in new talent, and expanding our facilities are all key priorities,” added Michelle Carpenter, Rowing Ireland CEO.
“This team embodies the resilience, ambition and potential of Irish rowing’s future. None of this would be possible without the collaboration of Sport Ireland, the Sport Ireland Institute, Sport NI, our clubs and loyal sponsors. Dominic has done an amazing job and I wish him, his team of dedicated coaches and our incredible athletes a successful World Rowing Championships.”
