The 17th and 18th minute goals last night at Windsor Park and Wembley may have caused heads to drop among the fans of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland but they did deliver a surprise win for two Sport for Business Members in our competition to win a new Republic of Ireland Man’s and Women’s jersey courtesy of our friends at JACC Distributors.

Karen Thorpe at the Gaelic Players Association wins the Women’s jersey and Joe Mooney at Lidl will be sporting the Men’s jersey after we had assigned goal minutes to all those who had entered the competition by 6 PM yesterday.

There wasn’t much else to cheer in either game as Slovakia completed a double Irish heartbreak in securing their place in the Euro Group alongside Spain, Sweden and Poland that will be playing some of their games at the Aviva Stadium next June.

Over in London Jack Grealish was always going to play a key role in England’s dominant win which brought to an end a 35-year stretch in which the Republic of Ireland played England seven times securing one famous win in Stuttgart and six draws.

We did get to see a glimpse of the excitement of qualification when Scotland progressed via a penalty shoot-out in Croatia but for now our Irish eyes will turn to the U21 Championship Qualifier this weekend against Iceland and then the Women’s Senior team taking on Germany next month, both games at Tallaght Stadium.
