The Ladbrokes Irish Grand National was won on Monday by a stable enjoying only its fifth win in five years.  Lion na Bearnaí which translates as fill the gaps certainly did that for former Amateur rider Thomas Gibney who looks after five horses at his yard in Kells Co Meath.
The winner was the first horse he bought when starting a training career which may now take off.  After winning the race he said that ‘owners come with headlines’ and he will certainly achieve those.  The horse was a 33/1 winner yesterday having won a big race at Navan in February at odds of 50/1.
Lion ne Bearnaí is owned by the Lock Syndicate, a group of eight friends from Dublin and Meath.  He cost €8,000 when he was bought and has now won almost €200,000 in prizemoney from his three career victories.
