Olytico, our partners in the monthly review of Irish Sport on Social Media have produced a great infographic looking at the social impact of key moments in Women’s sport over the past twelve months.
Ciara Mageean and Rachael Blackmore both make the list with 1,000 tweets celebrating their achievement on the running and racing tracks but it is when we look to the international moments that the numbers begin to accelerate quickly.
Kim Ng’s appointment as General Manager of the Miami Marlins produced 150,000 tweets, showing it’s in leadership as well as performance that the impact can be taken up on social media and amplified.
Katie Taylor generated 130,000 tweets when named as Ring Magazine’s best pound for pound Women’s boxer in the world.
The WNBA’s #SayHerName campaign surrounding Black lives Matter produced 660,000 tweets and Naomi Osaka’s activism was another major breakthrough in the context of social activism.
Women’s Soccer in the US had a stunning year, being the first pro sport to return to action after lockdown and seeing TV viewing audiences rise by almost 500 per cent.
It’s great to be able to look to, and be inspired by, such campaigns and well done to Stephen O’Leary and the team at Olytico, helped by RTÉ’s Elaine Buckley for bringing it together in such a strong visual presentation.
