This is the first time that the women’s game has been shown live on mainstream TV in Ireland and is a measure of the advances that are taking place in women’s sport and the commitment of RTE to show live content that is relevant to an Irish audience.
First and second ever wins against England and France in Ashbourne throughout this year’s RBS sponsored Six Nations have put Fiona Coghlan’s team one game away from the Championship and a place in history.
They have already secured the Triple Crown and have been standard bearers for Irish Rugby during a season of disappointment on the men’s side.
The Italy v Ireland Women’s match will be broadcast live from Parabiago in Milan this St Patrick’s Day, Sunday 17th March from 1.45pm on RTÉ Two television. The match itself kicks off at 2pm and the show will be presented by Joanne Cantwell, with commentary from Ryle Nugent and former Irish International Rosie Foley.
The game will also be streamed live on RTÉ.ie within the island of Ireland, and there will be live radio commentary updates from Michael Corcoran throughout RTÉ Radio 1 Sunday Sport.
“This is a significant investment by RTÉ in the women’s game and we are delighted to be able to bring the match to Irish audiences across all our platforms,” said RTE Head of Sport Ryle Nugent. “The team’s achievements in the Championship this year have been phenomenal and we wish them the best of luck in Sunday’s game.”
“We are delighted to have been able to secure broadcasting rights from the Italian Rugby Football Union to allow RTÉ to broadcast this historic game,” added the new IRFU Director of Communication, Stephen McNamara.
“The Women’s senior team has worked incredibly hard over many years to achieve this success and we hope that it will be a catalyst for the continued development of, and interest in, the Women’s game.”
