[ismember]The single clip had generated over 39,000 views at 7am on Monday morning, ahead of the highlights packages from any of the three games.
The RBS 6 Nations announced a partnership with YouTube on Friday that will see match highlights and exclusive content made available for YouTube viewers worldwide for the next three seasons.
The deal is a first for rugby anywhere in the world and will allow highlights from all the matches to be available within minutes of their live screening on the different broadcast partners’ including RTE.
More comprehensive packages will be available for viewers in the UK, Ireland and Italy, with extended highlights uploaded and available 24 hours after the games.
This ‘nearly live’ content will be supplemented by archive footage package and uploaded throughout the course of the campaign. At time of writing the page at www.youtube.com/RBS6Nations had generated 194,000 views, more than the total numbers who attended the three matches over the weekend.
“This is a fantastic development for the sport,” said RBS Six Nations CEO John Feehan “The channel will be the place to watch online coverage of the tournament and will provide our viewers with excellent footage from this year’s games as well as some of the glorious moments from the past.”
“The Six Nations is one of the world’s great sporting occasions and we’re very proud of this partnership which will bring comprehensive highlights to YouTube users,” added Stephen Nuttall, Senior Director – Sport for the EMEA Region at You Tube.
“We intend to build on this to establish YouTube as the online destination for rugby worldwide.”
This will perhaps come as something of a jolt to national Rugby Unions who themselves promote commercial partnerships through strong and extensive online channels. Irish Rugby TV has developed a strong following for press conferences, team announcements and interviews and gives a valuable opportunity in digital activation for partners like O2 and Guinness.
You Tube always has highlights clips uploaded by amateur’s often taken directly from TV coverage but moving it to an official channel significantly changes the parameters for broadcast and online.
It wil be interesting to see how the numbers climb over the course of the coming weeks.[/Ismember]
