Hannah Craig was the highlight for Ireland on day one of the Cannon Kirk GillenMarkets Irish Squash Open in Dublin yesterday.

She was the sole hometown favourite to progress to round two after a comfortable straight games victory against South African Hayley Ward

She will be back in action tonight at 18:45 when she takes on 7th seed Yasshimita Jadish Kumar of Malaysia.

The international nature of the event is clear from the fact that there were winners from England, South Africa, Pakistan, Egypt, Czechia and Spain in the Men’s tournament; and from Australia, Scotland, Wales, England, Poland, France, Germany and Ireland in the Women’s.

It wasn’t to be for Irish women Breanne Flynn and Hannah McGugan who both went down in straight games to Lowri Roberts and Alison Thomson respectively.

There was no hometown hero story on the men’s side of the draw as Sam Buckley and Sean Conroy couldn’t muster comebacks in their 3-1 defeats to Noor Zaman and Perry Malik.

Former world number one James Willstrop set up a clash with number one seed Nick Wall as he dispatched James Peach 3-1 in the first round.

Round two today will see the eight seeded players enter both draws with plenty of potential for surprises and upsets.

The live action is being broadcast live on Premier Sports this evening from 17:30.
