Peter McKennaPeter McKenna has been named Marketer of the Year for 2013 on the back of a number of successful initiatives run over the course of the past twelve months.

McKenna is Commercial Director of the GAA and Stadium Director of Croke Park and was given the award by Marketing Magazine and Alternatives Recruiters in recognition of the skilful marketing of ‘two distinctive but interwoven brands.’

Campaigns such as ‘Nothing Beats Being There’, ‘Unexpect the Expected’, ‘For the Love of the Club’ and ‘Croke Park makes it Epic’ were all cited as successful campaigns by the GAA and Croke Park Conference Centre.

“I’m delighted to win this accolade,” said McKenna. “It’s a tribute to both me and the colleagues I work with on one of the most iconic brands in the country.”

“From our perspective, the GAA must be marketed as playful and creative, but also purposeful and commercial.”

Earlier in 2013 the GAA won a prestigious European sponsorship award for the Kelloggs Cúl Camps programme.

Like in any sporting environment though, you only have a limited time to enjoy the fruits of one campaign before being plunged back into another.

McKenna and the team are now involved in negotiating the final make up of the sponsorship panel around the 2014 All Ireland Championship as well as a new round of Broadcasting rights.

Peter was one of those who contributed to last week’s successful Sport for Business Sports Tourism Seminar.
