McIlroy was appointed as a Unicef Ireland ambassador in March 2011 and has travelled to Haiti to see the work being done there. When a branding opportunity arose he shunned what may potentially have been a significant six figure deal and instead donated the position to Unicef.
“When an organization like Unicef needs your help to change the future for young people across the world, you jump at the opportunity to get involved,” said McIlroy. “I am very fortunate to have a fantastic group of supporters worldwide who I hope will care as much as I do about the survival and development of the children who need our help the most.”
“This extraordinary gesture by Rory McIlroy will help generate so much more awareness and support for Unicef across the world,” said Peter Power, Executive Director Unicef Ireland. “Through this partnership, Rory is showing how sport can be a powerful and positive force for children. This is a highly valued donation from Rory to Unicef and we are very thankful to him for his continued support.”
