
After a seven year hiatus, the first time the squad returned to the court was at an open trial at the Cork venue in December 2015.
Since then, the squad has trained there regularly and the Arena will host weekend camps there in the coming weeks ahead of flying out for the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries on June 26th.
The Munster based players within the squad also use the arena for midweek pod sessions as well as strength and conditioning.
The Mardyke Arena UCC is a popular venue for elite athletes and teams and currently enjoys relationships with other high profile entities including Cork City FC, UCC Sport and Swim Ireland.
The Mardyke Arena UCC logo will be worn by the Ireland Senior Women’s Squad at the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries.
FIBA’s European General Assembly was held in Dublin last month and Basketball Ireland General Secretary Bernard O’Byrne sits on its influential Finance Committee. Both are indicators of the full return to the fold of the international game that Basketball Ireland has effected in recent years.
This weekend the Governing Body will hold it’s Annual general Meeting and on Monday we will reflect with outgoing Chair Jackie Dunne and President Gerry Kelly on the advances they have seen during their terms of office.
