Yesterday we brought you the unlikely story of how Irish sports website Pundit Arena had captured video of a singer and his ukulele in Bordeaux on Friday night and how it went viral over the weekend resulting in 6.2 million views through their own Facebook channel alone.
The site founders Ross O’Dwyer and Richard Barrett are partners of ours in October’s major Sports & Tech event in Dublin and we know that once they set their mind to something it tends to happen.
The something in this case was to buy the song from performer Mick Konstantin and get him to record it in a studio in Dublin on Monday morning.
He delayed a five week trip to Asia to follow the dream and by yesterday evening, within 30 hours of its release the song hit number one in the Irish download charts.
It could all deflate with a defeat tonight but it alone proves that ‘impossible is nothing’ and we go into the match against Italy buoyed by the knowledge that a win will see the Republic of Ireland join Northern Ireland in the last 16.
If that is the case then Taking Over France will become the Put ’em under Pressure for a new generation, all because the lads had a crazy idea and saw how far it could take them.
Better still, because of a phone call on Sunday night all the proceeds of the song are going directly to the team at Special Olympics Ireland.
It doesn’t get much better than this…
