Galway staged a remarkable comeback from 14 points down to win the inaugural Wild Geese Trophy in Sydney yesterday.

The full 15 a side match took place at the Sydney Olympic Park yesterday and produced a thrilling finish for the Australia wide TV audience with the game ending all square and being decided on a free taking competition.

Highlights were shown on RTÉ last night and the match was sponsored by Allianz.

Apart from Allianz’ 27-year partnership with the GAA the global insurer also sponsors The Allianz Stadium in Sydney and has a partnership like it does here with the National Paralympic Committee.

“We are very proud of our strong relationship with our partners in the GAA and continue to welcome the milestones this partnership brings, as we look ahead to our 27th year as sponsors of the Allianz Leagues here in Ireland in 2019,” said Allianz Ireland CEO Sean McGrath.

“We are equally pleased to share in another historic milestone for the game as a whole by supporting this first ever full format game of Hurling to take place outside of Ireland in the ‘Wild Geese Trophy’.”

Festivities in Australia yesterday began with the Big Irish Brunch, followed by a series of hurling clinics and live music in the build-up to the pre-game welcome parade of both counties into the stadium.

The international focus of the GAA now switches West withthe Aer Lingus and TG4 supported Fenway Classic taking place at the home of World Series Champions the Boston Red Sox next weekend on the eastern seaboard of the United States.
