Live sport on television is what draws the sometimes multi million investment from broadcasters but the human story behind the achievement provides rich footage for documentary makers as well.
This weekend TG4 will broadcast a special programme on the history of Hill 16, to coincide with the All Ireland Football Final. The programme includes some rare footage of the famous terrace and explores among other snippets of history how it was originally named Hill 60 after a battle in Gallipoli in Turkey during WW1.
The programme on Sky following the fortunes of the British cycling team through a year of Tour de France and Olympic glory has also provided a fascinating insight to team preparation and dynamics.
In the US a 16 part documentary series on Ireland’s relationship with horse racing and equine sport is playing to big audiences on cable TV and will doubtless have a positive impact on the Gathering for 2012.
