Larry McCarthy became the first GAA President to represent an Overseas unit when elected to the position at the Association’s Annual Congress on Friday night.
He emigrated from Cork to New York in the 1980’s and has been deeply involved with Gaelic Games in the big apple since.
He has served as Chair and Secretary of the New York County Board and is a member of the GAA’s Management Committee as well as being a Trustee of the organisation.
In his day job in New Jersey McCarthy is a lecturer in Sports Marketing at Seton Hall University. He will however be relocating back to Ireland for the term of his office which will run from 2021 to 2024 after current president John Horan completes his term.
McCarthy is the first AIB All Ireland Club Championship winner to step up to the top role, He won with Thomond College Limerick in 1978.
The election was as dramatic as any Championship final with McCarthy and Jarlath Burns locked together on 110 votes before the fourth and final count saw the distribution of the eliminated John Bolbger of Leinster give him enough to win by ten in the end.
We are pleased that McCarthy has been a subscriber to Sport for Business over a number of years and we look forward to getting to know him better as he prepares to take on the position.
