McKerrow is to return closer to his native Australia after accepting a senior management position with High Performance Sport New Zealand, the government agency responsible for developing athletes across a range of sports.
He leaves behind an organisation that has doubled its membership under his leadership, expanded funding through stronger relationships with funding agencies the Irish Sports Council and Sport NI, and with commercial partners Vodafone and Kinetica.
The high performance side has also thrived with Gavin Noble and Aileen Reid (née Morrison) qualifying for the London 2012 Games and achieving world class results on the international stage.
Talent identification days for younger athletes have been developed and the Tata Kids of Steel initiative came to Ireland for the first time in 2012.
“It’s been an amazing journey – one I’m a little sad to be bringing to a close,” said McKerrow. “The achievements of the organisation in the past three years fill me with an immense sense of pride; and I thank all who’ve given me the opportunity to contribute to the sport of triathlon in Ireland, in particular the many hard-working and committed staff, volunteers and members of the triathlon community who each through their own contributions have made Triathlon Ireland the innovative, modern and healthy governing body it is today”.
McKerrow follows Angus Kirkland as the second high profile administrator in Irish Sport to take up an international position since the end of the London 2012 Olympic cycle.
Triathlon Ireland were one of the early adopters of Sport for Business and presented at the recent Sport for Business 20/20 event. We would like to thank Matt for his faith in what we are doing and wish him every success in the future.
Key take away for Sport: Individuals can transform organisations but the best will always be susceptible to poaching and systems need to be ensured so that what they leave behind can be easily secured and developed.
Key Take away for Business: Personal relationships remain a key part of any partnership agreement but the benefits for an organisation need to be judged against colder criteria.
