There was sporting redemption for Áine O’Gorman on Saturday as her two goals lifted Peamount United to the Women’s National League title for the second year in a row.

Last month it was at the wrong end of the pitch when O’Gorman’s own goal for the Republic of Ireland meant defeat in Ukraine and the need for a home win over Germany next week to rescue a playoff place for the Euro’s.

It was all smiles this weekend though as she led the team to victory over nearest challengers Shelbourne FC to win the title with a week of fixtures in hand.

The game was streamed live on FAI TV.

In front of Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team Manager Vera Pauw, it was a tight first half with few goalscoring chances created as a victory for either team would have seen them crowned as League winners.

But less than a minute into the second period Shelbourne took the lead.

The game started to open up after that goal.

On 66 minutes, Shelbourne broke away and Rebecca Cooke looked certain to score but before she could unleash a shot O’Gorman came out of nowhere with a superb tackle to deny her.

Then up the other end, O’Gorman showed her class by scoring her 13th League goal of the season from a direct free-kick.

Duggan then got in front of her marker to head the teams’ second and O’Gorman got her second of the night when hooking the ball in from close range to secure the title.

The focus now switches back to the international stage and the visit of Germany to Tallaght Stadium on December 1st.
